About Colleen Villa

Higher education marketer. Executive leader. Practitioner.
I've spent much of my career inside colleges and universities working on the same challenges Villa Marketing clients face today: enrollment pressure, changing student expectations, institutional differentiation, academic program growth, digital transformation, limited resources, and the constant need to balance strategy with execution.
That experience shapes how I approach consulting.
I understand that the answer that looks obvious from outside an institution often becomes considerably more complicated once governance, resources, academic priorities, enrollment realities, technology, and institutional culture enter the equation.
My job isn't to arrive with a predetermined answer.
It's to understand the institution, identify what matters, bring an informed outside perspective, and help leaders and teams make progress.
Professional Story
Strategy grounded in institutional experience.
Before founding Villa Marketing, I built my career within higher education in roles of increasing capacity and scope at institutions and roles that include:
-
University of Michigan Ross School of Business, Brand Manager
-
Washtenaw Community College, Director of Marketing
-
Ivy Tech Community College System, Assistant Vice President Marketing & Communications
-
Miami University, Associate Director Enrollment Marketing & Communications
-
The University of Olivet, Executive Director Marketing & Communications
My work has given me direct experience with the competing priorities, internal processes, audience expectations, and capacity limitations that shape higher education marketing.
I understand that institutions rarely need strategy or execution in isolation. Leaders need someone who can identify the larger issue, recommend a focused direction, and help complete the work required to support it.
That approach is central to Villa Marketing.
Thoughtful strategy. Direct collaboration. Meaningful progress.
I work directly with the leaders and teams responsible for moving an institutional priority forward.
Throughout engagements, I remain:
Focused
The engagement begins with the most important institutional or program need.
Collaborative
I partner closely with leaders, teams, and partners, bringing key players together rather than operating in silos.
Action-Oriented
Recommendations are connected to specific marketing activities, responsibilities, KPIs and next steps.
Flexible
Support can be structured as a defined project, an ongoing engagement, or a fractional leadership role.
